Electronic dance music (EDM) is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres originally made for

nightclubs, raves, & festivals.

The genre first came into being in the 1980s, around the time disco was losing popularity.

In the 80s and 90s, House, industrial, freestyle and Techno, sub-genres began gaining popularity. Acid house and the early Rave scene were trending in Germany and the UK, and with them came warehouse and underground parties that were dedicated to the growing EDM culture.

In 1989, approximately 10,000 people at a time would attend commercially organized underground parties that were eventually labelled as “Raves”.

EDM has amassed a very dedicated fan base over the past few decades. This popularity is often attributed to a few characteristics related to EDM and it’s resulting culture:

  1. Experimentation: EDM allows for experimentation in sound, style, stage design, etc.

  2. Upbeat and easy to dance to: EDM often features hard-hitting beats that are incredibly easy to dance to- making this music a permanent fixture in house parties, raves, and music festivals.

  3. Huge festivals: EDM festivals are grand affairs. They are not just physically huge with large crowds but also feature stellar stage designs that make the events seem larger than they are.

The visual aesthetic of music festivals and raves are intrinsically linked to the perceived aesthetic of EDM.

Characteristics of the aesthetic include:

  1. Neon colours

  2. Bright laser shows

  3. Glow-in-the-dark

  4. Glitter

  5. Gitch effects, etc

"Electropunk holds a special place in my journey as an eyewear designer at Lenskart, being my inaugural project that set itself apart from previous endeavors. The distinctive nature of this product lay in its extensive focus on material innovation and the iterative process of prototyping, introducing me to a realm of challenges and opportunities for creative exploration. As a designer, the initial concept for the collection was rooted in practicality—aiding people in finding their glasses in the dark. However, what made Electropunk truly iconic was the infusion of a thematic element. This unique combination of functionality and style transformed the collection into a symbol of innovation and marked the beginning of a design approach that goes beyond the conventional boundaries of eyewear."
